Pharmacological properties
ATCvet: QJ01— antibacterials for systemic use. QJ01XХ - other antibacterials.
Enramycin is an antibiotic of the polypeptide group, which acts bactericidal, mainly on gram-positive microorganisms (Clostridium perfringens, Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp.). It is not absorbed from the digestive tract, therefore, it makes impact exclusively upon intestinal microflora. It inhibits growth of microorganisms producing ammonia, facilitating reduction of the ammonia level in digestive tract. Enramycin is not detected in tissues and body fluids. It is excreted in feces.
The mechanism of action consists in dysfunction of the cell membrane of microorganisms by inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall.
The resistance of bacteria to enramycin develops slowly. No resistance of Clostridium perfringens is observed. Microorganisms do not show cross-resistance between enramycin and other antibacterial drugs.
Administration
Treatment of poultry and swine in diseases of the digestive tract caused by microorganisms sensitive to enramycin.
