Pharmacological properties
ATCvet: QJ01– antibacterials for systemic use. QJ01FA91 - Tilmicosin.
Tilmicosin is a semisynthetic antibiotic of the macrolides group, with bacteriostatic effect in low concentrations, and bactericidal effect in high concentrations on gram-positive microorganisms, namely: Pasteurella spp., Haemophilus spp., Actinomyces spp., Corinebacterium spp., as well as mycoplasma (Mycoplasma spp.) and ornithobacteria (Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale). The mechanism of tilmicosin action consists in blocking of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell by forming a complex with 50S subunits of ribosomes.
Tilmicosin is rapidly absorbed, accumulates in phagocytes (macrophages, heterophiles) and in the tissues of respiratory organs in concentrations, considerably exceeding a concentration in the serum. The maximum concentration is detected in the blood in 2 hours. Tilmicosin concentration in lung tissues and air sacs is preserved at a therapeutic concentration for at least 60 hours after application. It is metabolized with formation of several metabolites with antibacterial activity. It is primarily excreted in feces.
Administration
Treatment of diseases of respiratory organs caused by tilmicosin-sensitive microorganisms in chickens, piglets (under 3 months old) and calves (under 3 months old).
Dosage
Administer orally with drinking water or milk substitute in the following doses:
- chickens 500 ml of the drug per 1000 l of drinking water (125 mg tilmicosin per 1 l of water) for 3-5 days;
- piglets (under 3 months old) - 80 ml of the drug per 100 l of drinking water (200 mg tilmicosin per 1 l of water) for 5 days;
- calves (under 3 months old) - 1 ml of the drug per 20 kg body weight (12.5 mg tilmicosin per 1 kg body weight) twice a day for 3-5 days.
Contraindications
Do not administer to animals with hypersensitivity to tilmicosin.
Do not administer to hens, laying eggs for human consumption.
Do not use in combination with injectable macrolides.
Do not administer to cows with functionally developed fore stomachs.
Do not administer the drug with feed containing bentonites.
Precautions
Side effect
If the drug is administered in recommended doses, side effects do not appear.
Overdosing can, in some cases, reduce productivity of animals and even poisoning.
Special precautions for administration
If the mother solution is prepared, the drug shall be added in water, not vice versa. Medicated water shall be the only source of drinking water throughout the whole treatment period!
Before treatment, it is recommended to determine the pathogen sensitivity to tilmicosin.
Administration in pregnancy and lactation
Do not administer the drug to lactating animals.
Excretion (withdrawal) period
Animal slaughter for meat is allowed in 14 days (piglets) and 7 days (chickens) following the last drug administration. Meat, obtained before the mentioned term, shall be utilized or fed to non-productive animals depending on the statement of a veterinary physician.
